Using Library Databases and Content in Canvas (Faculty)

Use this guide to learn how to link and embed content from library resources into your Canvas courses.

Adding Content - Introduction

Depending on your need you may want to provide students with curated reading lists, research starters, or academic articles within your Canvas course. Below you'll find general instructions to embed content from selected library resources / databases into your Canvas Pages, Modules or Assignments. 

Please note: Some library resources only allow you to link to the content. Other resources allow you to choose whether you would like to link OR embed the content in your page or assignment. 

Gale resources allow embedding of content or linking. Most other resources only allow linking. 

Here is a list of resources which can be linked or embedded in Canvas pages, assignments, or modules:

  3. Films on Demand
  4. Gale in Context : Biography
  5. Gale in Context : Environmental Studies
  6. Gale in Context : Global Issues
  7. Gale in Context : Middle School
  8. Gale in Context : Opposing Viewpoints
  9. Gale in Context : Science
  10. Gale in Context : World History
  11. Gale Literature Resource Center
  12. Gale Literature : LitFinder
  13. National Geographic Kids

 

Adding Content to Pages, Assignments, & Modules

  1. Click Edit on your Page (upper right)
  2. Click 3 vertical dots > Apps
  3. Choose resource you'd like to search
  4. Perform search to find article, image, etc. you'd like to link to or embed in your Canvas Page
    1. Some resources only allow linking
    2. Other resources; like Gale databases, allow you to choose whether to embed or link content
      1. In Gale, after performing a search you'll see an option at the article level that will allow you to choose either link or embed
  5. Click Select This / Embed 
  6. Save progress on Canvas page at bottom right
